MYSA History and Story

MYSA is a unique community soccer club with a 20+ year history of growing and evolving while simultaneously remaining true to its local roots.

In the year 2000, several local parents endeavored to host a fun soccer experience for their young kids that did not require travel to a neighboring city and the accompanying time and expense. A grass roots effort grew that included volunteer parent coaches, a local school allowing us to play on their playground, and the city recreation department lining a field. In a blink, our first season of U6 soccer was complete and a rousing success. Of course so many of the U6 kids had older siblings and their parents wanted the same soccer opportunity locally for all their kids.

By season two we had two additional age groups and were playing games in the outfields of the city baseball parks. By season three we applied for and were awarded recreation level membership in NCYSA. Participation, enthusiasm, and success eventually led to application and designation for levels 2 and 3 membership allowing MYSA to fully participate at the state level with NCYSA. Our league was now several hundred kids from a community to whom we vowed to maintain a meaningful soccer opportunity that would not be cost prohibitive.

MYSA employed and still leverages a volunteer coach model that utilizes professional training to assure competitive development while still offering a soccer experience that is significantly more affordable than surrounding clubs. From a club that was run solely by volunteers MYSA now enjoys a full time Executive Director, Academy Director, Recreation Director, and is in process of adding a Classic Director. While holding on to its volunteer coach model the club has, when necessary, engaged professional coaches to further ensure development and success.

MYSA continues to benefit from a 20-year partnership with the City of Mebane, whose fields we use and help maintain. Mebane stepped up many years ago by adding a 4-field dedicated soccer complex. They further committed to youth soccer in 2018 with a two-field artificial turf facility. The mutually beneficial relationship with the City of Mebane is a big part of the success and growth of MYSA. Today MYSA has long since passed the 1000 kid threshold and fields teams in the highest levels of NCYSA play, not just competing, but winning. We are proud of our City, proud of our league, proud of our volunteers, and proud of our kids. Soccer is successful at MYSA. MYSA is supported by the Mebane Community and the City of Mebane.

MYSA teams compete, MYSA teams win, and MYSA kids grow. Thank you to all that are a part of MYSA’s success. I am Chip Foushee. My kid played in that first soccer game in Mebane behind the school. I coached in that same game. 20+ years later I am still here as an officer and volunteer. This is fun.
